We have several unused magic bands from about 5 years ago due to cancelled trips. I think they are second generation MBs.
We are finally heading back this year after Xmas.
Will the MBs still work? Assuming not and we don't want to buy MBs. Will they give me an RFID card as my ticket when we enter?

IIRC, the RFID in the MB's lasts a long time, so that should work for room entry and charging to your room. The battery, which is needed to activate ride photos, lasts a few years then dies. So if ride phots are important, I'd get new MB's.
I have an OG Haunted Mansion MB that I'm going to try on our next trip to see what it works for and what it no longer works for.

Magic bands have both an active and a passive type of rfid. Things like ride pictures, your name being shown on a ride or that kind of a thing, does not work after about a year or so when the battery dies. After the battery dies, everything else will still remain as usual. You can charge to your room, open your door, enter the park, use it for tap points like with lightning lane, and anything that you tap your magic band for it will work. That should never stop working unless some weird catastrophic thing happens to your band. If ride pictures are important you can try and see if you were a cell phone will pick them up with Bluetooth, but I have never had that work well for me.

To amplify on this, my original magic band, now about a decade or so old, still works every time. I wear the single new style that I received because it's more comfortable. But I bring Methuselah on each trip just to check.
I expect this to work until, at some point, the technology changes. Or until 2042...whichever comes first.
Cheers.

Cheers.

Thanks for asking the question that I too had. For our 2024 trip, if we continue to use our five year old magicbands, and are interested in getting ride pics, a work around would be to get at least one person a new MB? And is the selection of MBs greater in the parks / Disney Springs than what we are currently being offered (approx. 80 MBs) on the Disney MDE website?

Keep in mind the 2 by 2 rides won't pick up the whole group if you have more than 2 riders. You do get discounted MBs online with resort reservations or APs. If you get a MB+ they are rechargeable too. Not sure where the best selection is though.

So how do we destroy these ? Can I drown them ? Will somebody find mine in the trash and try to resell them? I nave deactivated them . The battery would be considered non recycle. ?

Yes, older Magic Bands are still good. I made one of my original MB's into a puck clip on, that I hook to my belt loop or have in my pocket. I have it as a back-up in case I lose one off my wrist. Three times in the past year, I have had a MB "pop off" my wrist while on a ride. Twice on Rock n Roll Coaster. It looks like this....

I found a guy on etsy who makes them for the MB+ that can stay in while recharging. I do have one like above but prefer the others since I don't have to worry about removing. I hate wearing them so I have them on a retractable clip that either clips to my bag or my pocket depending on what I wear. So much easier and secure. The new ones practically require sliders to secure.

So as luck would have it, my old MBs are sitting next to me in a drawer. I still have some first gen MBs...the slim ones. I wonder if those still work.
