I know we have some folks that are good with the camera and lens here. Though I would start a thread to discuss equipment, trips and pictures etc...so I will start.
Returned on June 3 from 13 nights in France that included a day trip to DLP. Took my Sony a7ii with the Sony 24-105 lens and then also had my iphone 12 Pro Max.
I took over 1200 photos in total. I have to admit I am leaning more and more to only having the iphone. Just much easier in travel and does not make you stand out to pick pockets as a tourist.
I need to do a trip report but have not had time to look at all my photos and edit...plus I need to learn how to upload to this site. I only use Icloud and Google photos for storage online.

This is a great thread. Thanks Jamie.
I have been thinking about a nice camera body (likely something like a Nikon) since retirement. So far, I just use my iPhone and it's fine. Of course, there are a number of pictures I never take since, when I look through the lens, it's lacking what I see. And this is where I'd want some more lens versatility.
But your point about the phone being sufficient, and far more compact, resonates as well.
As this is a multi-thousand dollar outlay, I'm far from deciding I need to do it. And this thread will definitely be helpful.
Cheers.

We did a cruise to Alaska three weeks ago. I had my Nikon (the good camera) and had my mobile phone. There were times when the Nikon certainly out performed my camera. Having three different lens choices was great for the various situations. The downside was it was cumbersome and took time to constantly change lens. When looking back on all the photos and videos, I think that next trip I am just using my phone and leaving the big camera home. Here are my reasons why...
The comparison of the quality of the pics were not that great of a difference 95% of the time. Ease of use and transport phone vs camera. Ease of switching modes with a push of a button. Ease to change and record videos. The Nikon really is not built to take videos. Ease of utilizing the pics once taken. Not connecting to the computer or coping memory cards. The one con is that with the multiple lenses of the Nikon, the performance was well beyond the phone. But at the end of the day, those situations were not that frequent and I am only taking pics for myself, not a travel magazine/blog.

My experience agrees with both of your comments.....having the lens versatility is nice to have. There are some shots and exposures that are unattainable with a phone.
The multi-thousand outlay is real, especially if you start buying nice lens for your camera.
A hidden expense for the nice camera is external storage, those pics take up a lot of digital storage space. And if you are going to take nice photos, you need to have nice software to edit them.

My daughter is the camera person. I just use my iPhone.
But, she has been renting lens. It gives her the chance to try a new lens before purchasing. She has also just rented lens to take on vacation.

Tom, similar experience in Loire valley and Paris. For most pics my iphone was more than fine I never use the Full Frame for Video. I know it excels but that is not the type of video I take. iphone is perfect for video. For close shots of still life subjects in museums, or statuary my iphone is fine. Where my Sony a7ii and the telephoto lens excels is that distance shot where I want detail I would think an on ship shot of glaciers the larger sensor of the full frame would be an advantage. It was on some Chateau shots and shots of the Gardens at the Chateaus. Saying that, for the inconvenience of carrying my satchel (how I carry my full camera) vs my pocket, I am just not sure of the added value. I will know more once I have done some editing.

I'll be interested hearing the kind of gear people bring into the parks.
I do enjoy the results I get with my Sony a6000, though I'm still learning the intricacies of it. It's nice for the parks because it's smaller, so my camera bag isn't all that heavy and fits easily in a cinch sack.
Most recently, I purchased a Sigma 30mm 1.4 prime lens to go with the two Sony kit lenses that came with the camera bundle I got from Costco some years back. The prime lens is a bit of an adjustment, but the dark ride shots, evening shots and portraits I got with it were far superior to what I was getting with the kit lenses.

I’m not a Camera person…I can barely carry my cellphone for pictcures in the parks. “Gear” would be my Sony CyberShot pocket size . I lost it many years ago touring the Epcot Pavillions .
I wonder how much training the Castmembers receive in the Parks.

So I invested thousands at one point into amazing camera and lenses and all that jazz. Took cameras with me everywhere especially when my kid was little and had a diaper bag. Then the stroller went away and I realized what I can carry as my issues got worse as time went on turned into nearly nothing. Some days I can only carry my cell phone and even that can be hard as cross body straps holding cell phones hurt me. It's tough to admit that you cannot do stuff. Instead, I have an amazing camera on my phone (consistently ranked at the top or near top) that hasn't failed me yet.
All my years learning settings and best practices are thrown away to a cell phone. Who knew?
I also try not to take quite so many pictures as I missed moments. I still came home with about 1000 photos to sort last week.

And if you are going to take nice photos, you need to have nice software to edit them. Used to be good friends with a guy who got into photo as a serious hobby. He ended up doing a subscription editing software solution, I want to say the word "Lightbox" comes to mind. He would also get used lenses from B&H. He was a Nikon guy. Don't ask me any more than that. Re: Disney, I really like the way my mind remembers "photos".

The hassle factor (even if not a Hasselblad ) will outweigh (literally) other considerations and the equipment will sit in a closet. I also try not to take quite so many pictures as I missed moments. I still came home with about 1000 photos to sort last week. Word. We go to a lot of concerts (23 so far this year). I am disappointed by the number of screens I see filming the songs rather than have people experience things live. It's easy to see that these videos will be mediocre at best and nowhere near what things are like live. I might take an occasional picture if up very close, but then put it away. Some examples, and all iPhone Cheers.

I love seeing old concerts on tv or youtube, then realizing it was before everyone had a phone and I really enjoy seeing the sea of people that are actually watching the performers and soaking it all in.
