Hello, Friends!
We’ve planned a winter break trip, and when I say planned I mean we have 5/7 nights booked - that is it! No parks, dining, nothing else. This doesn’t have me that concerned. Availability for Feb 22-24 is non existent. I’m looking at Coronado Springs.
I haven’t been to Disney during a break for years. As a kid we went during winter break all the time. I have a feeling things are much different now. It also looks like we’re overlapping a cheer event and a race. Dates are 17-24 Feb. Are we crazy for going at this time? As my kids get older it’s just not possible to take them out of school without it being a total headache with catching up.
Look forward to feedback!

Wow Does sound crazy and crowded for reasons you are aware of… I’m not seeing anything reasonably priced for the Disney resorts … Are they old enough to go to Universal Studios for a few days? USO has a lot of crowd pleasers with less hassle cause their Mardi Gras Parade is festive for all ages ! Well that’s my. best suggestion
Keep us posted with your planning

I am there 2/17 to 2/24. I believe 2/23 to 2/25 is the race weekend. Those races are very popular, so that explains the lack of availability.

This will be our 4th year going during winter break. Prior to that we weren't in a school district that had a winter break. The biggest crowds are on the weekend leading up to and on President's Day. This year we're arriving on the 19th, which will be busy but the crowds will thin a bit as the week goes on. Even with the crowds, we really enjoy it. We take advantage of the extra evening hours on Monday (Epcot) and Wednesday (MK) and usually have a pool break in the afternoons.

Hi, We go during many breaks. Thanksgiving, Columbus Day, Spring break, all of them. They're fine LOL. You'll be fine. This will become the norm for you. It is for us; taking kids out becomes less an option as they level up. Despite missing no school for it, we've got 40-some Disney days identified as possible for our upcoming AP - mostly on breaks. So you work within their vacation times and that's just the reality of it. We've had so many great days during these times. Sometimes it seems strangely not crowded. Other times it seems moreso. I think it depends on what you're trying to do... like when you leave to take the kids to school 5 min late, is when you'll hit the most traffic. Maybe it is, maybe it just seems that way cuz you psyche yourself out. But you're going to Disney! So what if there's a lot of ppl there. Here, I'll spoil it for you: There will be a lot of ppl there. Now time to build an amazing trip. Last minute trips are so much fun cuz they're spontaneous. Even the idea of doing something quick is exciting. The challenge of pulling the details together excites me, maybe it does you too. I like that part of it. Think of this as building a trip on hard mode cuz you're planning it late in the game, for a busier time, etc. Just a bigger challenge for you.

Definitely old enough to go to Universal. We went last year for a day (non-Dis trip) and had a good time. Overall we found we definitely prefer Disney. Will keep you posted!

So far no luck with 22 and 23 Feb but did have a couple almost possibilities. First was POFQ, which we love! We actually got that reservation, then two days later received an email that the pool will be closed. We all agreed we didn't like the idea of going to POR for the pool, so we cancelled that. Next up was a single night that I found at SSR for the 22nd. I was frantically working to get it booked, then wasn't able to borrow enough points. After a quick call to member services, I learned about the inability to borrow banked points, and naturally the night was gone. I went with the advice of the person I spoke with and unbanked my points so this doesn't happen again, and so if my waitlist came through the reservation could be made. He was certain in this scenario they would rebank the points. I don't know if this was the safest thing to do or not. The person I spoke with was certain it shouldn't be a problem. Fingers crossed! Currently looking at a room at Coronado Springs.

We use to go the last week of February every year for our birthdays. Then Disney decided to add the Princess Marathons during that week. It use to be such a pleasant, non-busy week......this is no longer true. We now go the following weekend after the races to celebrate our birthdays. Those race crowds suck and really make everything at Disney busy. Plus add in the disruption to the transportation on race days.

I would just say temper expectations. We are going the week before Easter this year because our school decided it was brilliant to move spring break two weeks (yet we're back to normal next year - so stupid) and I am not entirely sure what to expect. I know that Easter and Passover are different times this year which will make each break week a little different than usual. We're also used to going during Florida spring break, or at least like half Florida seems to be off that week, and that can get rather hectic. So we just go knowing that we may not do as much as we normally do and just enjoy it. So go and have fun, but expect people? I truly don't believe they're really down times anymore anyway.

I hope you have a great time. I'm pretty sure we are all crazy too.
It seems Disney is always busy. We went the week after Labor Day this last September and the crowds were lower. In the last three years since moving here, that's it for low crowds!
Good luck with rooms. Keep searching and waitlist. I've had great luck with both. It's amazing what pops up now and again. I think central reservations is a little different, but I'm sure people cancel those rooms too.

No, you're not crazy. Our family goes during Spring Break every year for the same reasons. It's getting too hard to pull these kids out of school.
Manage your expectations as there will be crowds! We also talk about what rides are each person's priority the night before we head to a park. We then focus on those 4 rides and if that's as far as we get on a day, that's ok!

Are kids really into lego? If so, depending on ages, Legoland may be a viable alternative. It's not Disney. But it is a fun little park, great for younger kids with a mix of mild coasters, some dark rides, some flat rides, shows, a soarin style theater ride and many build activities. DD preferred Legoland to Disney for a few years. She loved the on-site hotel. DH liked the ease of Legoland compared to Disney, the extremely lower crowds and overall lower price tag. But he would remark it's not Disney and joke about the employees training in the minor leagues before moving on to a Disney job.
FWIW - - for my family, even the crazy busy times at Disney can usually be handled with some variation of rope drop / night visits to parks with time exploring resorts or chilling from mid morning to late afternoon.
Hope you have a fantastic visit!

I have been on race weekends before and honestly I did not find it to be awful...maybe because I was just prepared for it to be busy. I do feel that Disney overall is more difficult if not planned far in advance....we took our son on a last minute Universal trip...had absolutely nothing booked and had the best time. Walked up to restaurants, rode every ride (only had to wait for the rides with no fast lane)....my biggest problem....found out I do not handle roller coasters very well anymore As for Disney - I haven't been in February for awhile, but last race weekend we were there we still had a great time and got to do all the rides we really wanted! Our kids are older now and we cannot pull from school as easily as we could when they were all in elementary, so we have had to adjust our expectations and just roll with it!
