When traveling (like now), I prefer to use VPN on hotel wifi networks. Most sites work with this, but MO does not, for understandable reasons.
Is there any way to get this site to work with a VPN? I use BitDefender, if that matters.
Cheers.
Edit: Never mind. All good, mostly...

There is nothing on my end I can do to help. Reasons why VPNs get blocked are long (some legal based even) and some sites just categorically block certain VPNs, servers, geo locations etc. I have no control over this. Often swapping servers or moving to a better VPN will clear it. Sometimes cache clearing and going incognito will too. But I cannot change this even if I wanted to as it goes above levels I have any control over.

I am considering Surfshark for a VPN. Anyone have any thoughts?

Turns out that choosing a specific location (New York, in this case, since we're there) works versus the "Automatic" setting for the location.
Cheers.

You are not the first to ask too. If I could change it I would!

I use Express VPN and the Miami location functions well while I’m at WDW.

The fact that you're using a VPN isn't what's causing the block (I use a VPN on MO all the time) -- it's the fact that the site host (not helenabear, we're talking ProBoards, or even their host) has blocked the exit node/IP of that particular VPN server due to the bad actions of other users of that server in the past. Like helenabear said, you can cycle through the different server options available, try to connect, and see if one works. Another option is to buy a dedicated IP with your VPN provider, meaning you're not sharing an IP with a ton of other users, resulting in a much lower chance that IP is (or will be) banned.

Truthfully what causes the block can vary greatly. For some blocks it's the actual VPN not being trusted (free VPNs are notorious for this). Some it's a geo-location issue. For others it's related to something else. Who does the block I am not 100% sure of as I have no say anyway (is it the host, is it proboard etc). Hopefully cycling through or the like can help most who deal with it. VPNs are good but at the same time some have created some chaos - even for users with privacy concerns. But it is what it is

When I hear the words "free" and "vpn" used together, I assume your data isn't as private as you want it to be.

My reason for using a VPN is that I will be on a 15 day cruise and may need to do some banking. Since banking websites are a secure one, maybe not? Nord VPN gets great reviews, but SurfShark supposed to be a little more user friendly.

The only time I use a vpn is when I want to book something that needs a US website. Like WDW tours and experiences, or ShopDisney etc. Funny how it’s all Disney related!
I use Privado and it comes up with a specific US city, a different one each time - it seems like a random generator and I just watch the cities scrolling past until it stops on one.

I use ExpressVPN. This site is fully functional while using it. Wherever I’m signed in.

Yeah, I mentioned above that being more selective with the VPN's IP helped. I use BitDefender for my security software, and their VPN is an additional $19/year. It lets me choose the VPN IP location, and "Automatic" must default to something with enough shady activity for ProBoards.
Using "New York" while here works fine.
Cheers.

I am not techy at all. Family member helped me set up SurfShark and also Bitdefender. Sometimes I have to pause SurfShark on certain legit websites to get through. I use Chrome and Firefox. When I type magicowners dot com in the browser, Bitdefender blocks it every time with the message 'suspicious page blocked for your protection'. But... if I Google magicowner and click on the Google link, it always work. Please give me some advice on how to make MO work using browser. Thanks.
