Got you all beat today! Went to see the Pirates Movie Curse of the Black Pearl on the big screen AMC ….well not their biggest screen but they are reporting very strong audience turnout for this ! It was fun to relive loving Captain Jack Sparrow. Disney could bring back all their movies on the movie screen and I would probably pay all over again to watch them But I love going to the movies.
Did not realize that was Zoe Saldana portraying the female pirate in this movie .
She has starred in Pirates, Avatar , Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers making her the first actor to ever appear in 4 movies that have crossed $2 billion dollars worldwide box office .

I found an interesting article claiming that "Studio comedies are a dying breed." and "It’s not just comedies — mid-budget movies, things like courtroom dramas, horror movies, etc, have been on the decline for years, in favor of wide-appealing blockbusters like superhero movies and Christopher Nolan flicks." They list a set of great comedies from the 90s. And we've seen more than half such that I agree. www.cnn.com/entertainment/best-90s-comedy-movies-cec/index.htmlCheers.

Went to see Elemental and my whole family enjoyed it a lot. We thought it was the best Pixar movie in a while, doesn't need the big screen, but it was great.

Sorry I also went to see Elemental today and did not like it although I tried to convince myself every 15 minutes to keep watching.. Think I walked out with about 15 minutes left . I assumed everybody was asleep ( parents) …not knowing their children were also asleep with nap time . Not much audience reaction or anything with this bizarre movie.
So horrible to see parents feeding their baby lighter fluid and the elderly father coughing over & over with grey smoke coming out of his mouth to portray illness, Covid or cancer or something ?
I did love the previews and the Pixar short . That was a nice surprise
I guess I am worried about Screen Writers and Actors Guild Strike creating a shortage of movies! Did you hear Disney plans to invite their Haunted Mansion castmembers to attend the new Haunted Mansion movie ?

Interesting article about both movie and TV concept being broken, above and beyond the current strike. Streaming and the emergence of AI are highlighted. (may be behind a paywall)
In Hollywood, the Strikes Are Just Part of the Problem"It’s a slowly dying business, but it’s at least better than a quickly dying one. Fewer than 50 million homes will pay for cable or satellite television by 2027, down from 64 million today and 100 million seven years ago, according to PwC. When it comes to traditional television, “the world has forever changed for the worse,” Michael Nathanson, an analyst at SVB MoffettNathanson, wrote in a note to clients on Thursday." Cheers.

Personally, I hate how everything is getting more and more compartmentalized and monetized. One example that is driving me nuts is sports broadcasting. I am an Orioles Fan, lived my whole life in/near Baltimore. But I can no longer watch games without a subscription to Masn. Football is driving me nuts too now. Some games on Fox, some on ESPN, some on Amazon, etc......and guess what, its not easy to just flip a channel. And the football is only going to get worse.
We have all these avenues for content, but its spread out all over the place and the costs are stupid to watch all the programs you want to watch. And if you don't pay for Disney+, Paramount, AppleTV, Netflix, Masn, Amazon, etc.....you cant see the shows. I feel that all this compartmentalizing and paywalls are killing the industry worse.
I think movies will still stick around. how is everyone going to see these shows being made? How will independents distribute movies? Why would a movie House make a movie and then limit its audience?
Michael Nathanson is dead on in his assessment.

And....50 million is still a lot of homes, lots of people.....this should not be dismissed by those companies.

Circling back to the original post.....
Movie houses need to create original content, that people want to see. They need to stop this rehashing/retelling of movies. They need to stop the endless cycle of sequels and prequels. They need to stop worrying about filling quotas, offending a "group", preaching a social message. We want comedy, drama (without drama), original screen plays, thought provoking experiences (looking at you Sound of Freedom).

We don't watch sports, so haven't followed the impacts here. I try to find a way to watch the Superbowl for free each year, and that's the extent of sports watching.
As for others, definitely too many splits for stuff. We have the channels we have and can always find something interesting there. Lots of really good stuff for our tastes on Netflix.
Movies will be interesting as we look at AI's ability to eliminate the need for background actors. Not saying I support this, but it's easy and cost effective to do so, so there will be a move in that direction.
Big-name actors, and CGI. I've seen some CGI-only productions that are compellingly realistic. if this were relegated to background actors, it would be very difficult to spot.
When Bob said "the times they are a'changin'" he had no idea how right he was in so many areas. Or maybe he did...
Cheers.

Replacing actors, even background actors, would be a crime. How will we find the next great actor, if they aren't getting background roles to start. And how many iconic scenes, or quotes would be loss because AI will follow the script exactly, whereas an actor improvised or messed up, but was the scene stealer.

I'm just saying that it would be easy and current actors are concerned about it. I don't like it but, to some degree, I expect some amount of it. And it will be a sad turning point.
Cheers.

We have a home theater in the house: risers, motorized seats, huge screen with projector, 9.6.6 Atmos system. We have cable and all the streaming services, and big TVs. We have a huge movie collection (800+ movies) and members of the Disney Movie Club. We do family movie nights every Saturday at home, and take turns deciding what to watch.
Even with all that, we still go to movies often. Off the top of my head, just this year we saw Top Gun, Super Mario Bros, and just saw MI7 last weekend. It's kinda' like the cool thing to go to the "reserved seat theater" with food brought to us.
The only thing that keeps us from going are politics. We don't do politics in our movies, EITHER side of the aisle, and we definitely don't do it in our kids movies.
I know peoples' viewing habits are changing, COVID impacted Hollywood, the Writers' strike is weighing in, etc. IMO, it's the politics that's doing the most damage to movie going.

I think the silent power of propaganda is the scariest thing about movies. I also think it is sad our children can not enjoy simple freedoms without all the confusing media. Remember when our biggest newest fear to worry about was subliminal:messages ?

Is anyone going to spend the bucks and see “ Oppenheimer “ on the big screen? Unless we are at Disney, we will just wait for it to come out on the streaming channels. Cant wait to hear feedback about the movie.

Cant wait to hear feedback about the movie. Nope....there has been lots of hype for the movie. I just can't see this being a must see movie. We already know what he did and it's not really a gripping story or thrill adventure. The buzz is for industry rewards nods.....boring. Wanted to add that the movie will fare well, but I dont see it having legs.
