- The new songs were just bad. There's no mincing words on this one. Sorry, but Lin Manuel Miranda does not have the Midas Touch. He's had his heydey, and now it's time to put him out to pasture and get some new song-writing blood.
- The changes to the existing songs were also bad. For instance, in both "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl," there used to be a big ensemble and chorus backing the lead vocals, but they changed both of them to be just a duet and a trio, respectively. The new versions come across as muted and dry compared to the original versions. I haven't seen it yet, but the Disney Channel on Sirius has been running the songs to promote the movie so I've heard the soundtrack. I couldn't agree w you more here. The changes to existing songs did not add value or a fresh perspective on a beloved tune - they just lopped off the most exciting parts. The new songs were not memorable at all.

I saw it yesterday with DH and 2 boys 13&10. Was it the best movie we ever saw, no. Was it as good or better than the animated version, no. Do I think it deserves all the hate it is getting, also no. I thought it was pretty cute and am glad that I saw it. I recommend all Disney fans see it (even if on Disney +) and make up their own minds.

I also don't think it deserves all the hate it's getting as a result of its controversial casting choice. That's unfair, and like I said, Halle Bailey was the best part of this movie. I just didn't like other stuff about it, and *really* wanted it to be awesome.

I can understand controversy about "yet another live action remake." But picking a black person to be in a movie should not, IMO, be controversial.
We didn't like the original enough to rush out and see this. it was good, but not OMG good.
Cheers.

To be fair, I was taken a little by surprise at first by this choice, not specifically because she was black, but because she didn't look like "my Ariel" that I remember as a kid. It could have been any other physical change, skin color, hair color, or played by a male and I still would have had similar reservations.
I eventually warmed up to idea and didn't go into the movie with any concerns at all, and like I said, thought she did a great job. 👍

I do not think the current discussion is based on “ Controversial Casting Choice “ from the original announcement … The current Rolling Stone Article should be read . It is an extremely intelligent discussion with important considerations we should all care about as society tries to move forward . But scrubbing Art to avoid Corporate controversy is worthy of our intelligence to be concerned about. please take time to read the RollingStone Review Article and the links provide all Samples of the music from Little Mermaid Movie . Personally all of the media and trailer releases and that beautiful Live Performance in front of theDisneyland Castle (exquisite) makes me think I have experienced the movie Exceptt for Mellissa McCarthy as Ursula … I can probably see that over & over ! Haha

The Little Mermaid was one of my favorite movies as a kid. When I heard they were doing a live action version, I had no interest in seeing it, and I still don’t. One of the only live action movies I’ve liked is Maleficent. I don’t find that the live action versions of most of them add anything to the story which makes me want to see them. I didn't like the live action of 3 or 4 of them and gave up. I mostly read the audience reviews, and if something looks good, I'll give it a try. If most people don’t seem to like it, I usually don't either.

I enjoyed it. I think Halle Bailey is the reason to go see it. She’s great. But I understand waiting for Disney+.

I have not seen it and probably never will. I do not like the live action remakes. I prefer the animated originals. No matter how hard they try, you can not duplicate any of the animation into real actors, in real scenes. I liken the live action movies to going and listening to karaoke, and thinking its as good as the original band/singer.....just not the same overall experience.
We did see GoG last month and was happy with that offering, actually the whole GoG series. Its been quite a few years that Disney animation/Pixar has produced anything decent, original and worth watching more then once. I saw the previews for Elemental and it looks to be another unoriginal bore fest. It has a $200m budget, plus marketing and its projected opening right now is only at $40m.

I'm not interested in Elemental at all. Looks terrible. Who knows, it might surprise me, but I'm not holding my breath.

But maybe that's the scientist in us looking at it from the physical standpoint
Cheers.

Just saw the little mermaid tonight! Adult daughter and I loved it! Many tears and laughs, then came home to watch the original. Still really loved the remake!

I enjoyed it. I think Halle Bailey is the reason to go see it. She’s great. But I understand waiting for Disney+. She's a really great actress and probably the only reason why I will eventually watch it. I'm not a fan of most live action remakes though. I saw the signs for the meets and greets at DHS and people seemed interested in what I saw. I don't do characters so I can only tell by where people are entering
