The Real issue is, a Public Company that has customers that both agree and disagree with the positions they took should NEVER have gotten involved in a political position period. That is the issue with our Corporations today. InBev is going to take a huge hit. Nowadays, nearly any position can become a political position if someone(s) want to take exception. As a customer, if you disagree with a political position of a company, in most cases, you have the right not to give the company your business. Republicans seem to be believe in "free enterprise" until they don't. {To be clear, I am talking in generalities and not explicitly at anyone's specific politics on this board.}

jflatto is right on!! Disney has been great for Orlando and Florida in general. As Wikipedia puts it: Perhaps the most critical event for Orlando's economy occurred in 1965 when Walt Disney announced plans to build Walt Disney World. Orlando and the surrounding area have been growing ever since. Walt Disney World has been a boom for Orlando and Florida in general. If I were the governor, I would just say thank you and move on.

Yup. Corporations, just like people, have the right to free speech (although there are measures in progress in Florida to curtail that). And they definitely should have, and express, positions. As jflatto astutely pointed out- some customers will, and some won't agree. It is their prerogative to patronize or move their business as such. There are businesses that have expressed views that I don't agree with. I fully support their rights to express those views and I simply do not do business with them (looking at you Chik-Fil-A).
For the state government to take obvious punitive actions for the exercise of free speech is democratically unconscionable.
Cheers.

Unfortunately, an ulterior motive of this political theater is another way for DeSantis to keep his name in the news.

Reported in Politico:
"Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday promised a new round of action against Disney in his ongoing dispute with the entertainment giant, including looking at the taxes on Disney’s hotels and imposing tolls on roads that serve its theme parks."
So, as he contemplates a presidential run, he thinks that imposing additional taxes on the people visiting his state is politically savvy? What a maroon.

The article is titled "Mouse trap: DeSantis vows Disney won’t win" DeSantis: "So come hell or high water we’re going to make sure that policy of Florida carries the day. And so they can keep trying to do things. But ultimately we’re going to win on every single issue involving Disney I can tell you that."
That sure sounds a lot like, "Nobody does this to me! I'm going to do everything I can to ruin your life!"
He also said basically that besides just overturning the things RCID did at the end, we are going to do other things like the taxes and tolls mentioned, he also said "we’re going to look at things like developing some of the property that the district owns.”
You know, like in the movies when the bad guy says not only is he going to kill our protagonist, he's also going to kill his wife and children and burn the house down.
I reference my own post earlier in this thread, where I said in real life, the bully does not say "aw, shucks" and walk away.

I propose the new toll roads that will impact Florida residents and tourists alike be named “Ron Desantis political career memorial toll road.”
A revenge toll road against one of the biggest contributors to Florida’s budget is the most absurd thing I have heard today.

We all have the right to and for free speech. But if you are a corporation selling goods or services to the public there can be consequences, both in revenue and market penetration, but also politically.
CFA is a good example. They seem to be ok with possibly some people not choosing to shop with them. Home Depot as well.
We will see if InBev AB is as impervious in thier positions or if they will take a demand hit.
Disney has, but I think they are replacing customers as fast or faster as they lose them so I see them much more like a CFA than an InBev.

I don't drink beer and couldn't figure it out. But yes we all have rights to free speech and should never expect government retaliation if it's done. People may treat you differently after and companies can expect gains or losses because of it. That's our choice.

Disney ended up siding with its vocal employees. And Disney has a history of this if you recall the 8 year boycott from the Southern Baptists initiated because Disney provided health coverage to the live-in partners of gay and lesbian employees and tolerated “Gay Days” at the parks. It appears that Disney believe it is easier to replace customers than key employees. I certainly have companies to whom I will not give my business and I’m sure those companies are fine with that.

Gotta love Bob! Iger this week alluded to parallels between DeSantis-led efforts to frighten CEOs into silence and those who were intimidated into silence over human rights abuses during World War II and the Civil War. As he said to his shareholders: “Those that stood in silence, in some ways, still carry the stain of indifference. So as long as I’m on the job, I’m going to continue to be guided by a sense of decency and respect and trust our instincts that when we do weigh in, we weigh in because the issue is truly relevant to our business and to the people that work for us.”

Yep. People have boycotted Disney for many things (remember the Dinosaur hatred too? Google if you missed that one). As you said we all have companies we do it with (support or not) and that absolutely is our right as individuals. This was not Disney's first nor last step into it all. Bubba Chapek just made it a hot mess with how he dealt even if politically he sides with the gov.

No corporation, even Disney, should not have an unfair advantage when it comes to taxes, permitting, etc. For Disney, the chickens have come home to roost!
