I”ve done trip reports before, but I usually do them right after the trip. This time I’m a bit late, so this will be more like a trip “thoughts” because I’ve already forgotten stuff!
First, we need some backstory. My parents do not plan things in advance. My mom has also declared on occasion that she wouldn’t like going to Disney. (Dad wanted to go, he definitely wanted to see Star Wars). On a lark, last February, we checked to see if Fort Wilderness had availability for my parents in their camper when we would also be at Disney. They did. We had to not talk about it until mom and dad were ready, but in September, when they were finally making plans for Christmas, we explained to them what we had and to my extreme surprise, they said yes!
One issue I ran into, is I made the reservation in my name. The one that’s connected to my account, and it was a BEAR to get my name off of it. The Fort has really weird rules about these things, especially during that week. I guess I had a good enough story and IT fixed it. I was also very patient.
So the party ended up being DH, DS, DD, mom and dad, my sister, her spouse and 3 kids, and me. Because once I got mom and dad to go, you don’t want to miss out! We were staying at VGF, mom and dad were at the campground, and my sister was staying at an offsite hotel (but I took notes from reading other trip reports and added them to the campground reservation). 11 people is hard to plan for. We did a lot of dining reservations of parties of 6 and 5. A few with 7 and 4. It turns out you can’t make a LL reservation for more than 10 people at a time. That was super annoying. But you can make genie+ reservations for 11, no problem! That just seems so arbitrary.
I had discussed with my parents how much they wanted to do, how many days, etc. We settled on 3 days of park hopping, and they’d have travel days on either end. We discussed rope drop, and what that meant. Our plan had been to go 5 days, so we went day 1 and day 5, and everyone else was “joining” days 2-4.
Wednesday we drove from my sister’s house stupidly early to get to HS about 30 minutes before early entry started. It was just us, and we did a few things. It was a rough start and I think a bunch of stuff was not working. But we rode slinky dog, Toy Story (twice), millennium falcon, MMRR, and star tours. I think we left by about 2:30 because we needed to get back to VGF to get our stuff in the room, then get to the campground to meet my parents so we could show them how Disney transportation works AND get back to VGF because we had planned to eat at the cafe for dinner at 6. We were running late. We Ubered it over to the campground which saved a few extra minutes. But then we had to do the Bus -> boat -> train to get back home! Not efficient at all, but MK would be my parents first park, and it’s too easy to get lost the first time.
Dinner was at GF cafe. That was great, we got two tables right next to each other, they took care of any/all issues, and it was super cute watching my son ask if they could handle a “regular” cheeseburger. And of course the lobby is impressive and amazing. Everyone enjoyed spending time there.
Day 1 was a success.

Thursday we started with MK. I didn’t realize that they were going to change the park start time to 8am, or we might have made slightly different plans for the first day! Haha. We explained to my parents that they needed to be at the boat dock at 6:30 am! So what actually happened was this: My sister and her group got to MK probably 10 minutes after we do, and everyone enters at the same time. I head straight for Starbucks to get my coffee, and the rest of them head straight for 7dwarves. My parents are walking in as I’m leaving Starbucks, and I realize that I should have gotten coffee for more people. oops! Mom and dad wanted coffee/breakfast, so we take care of that and completely miss 7 dwarves. No problem. We’re able to wander over there to head to the next thing. Oh, it was also cold and rainy. I was impressed that 7 dwarves was running. It may have been the worst ride on 7 dwarves ever, haha.
We then proceeded to ride haunted mansion, pirates, jingle cruise (someone may have stopped for breakfast sandwiches and then was that person catching up to the group…. Excuse me excuse me..). Then I think we rode Buzz before we split up and some rode space mountain while the rest of us did the laugh floor and then dumbo. We also got tron in there somewhere. Lunch was at Crystal palace where we attempted to have them seat us together, but that didn’t work. We waited FOREVER. But the meal was excellent, I had just expected it to be OK.
We then park hopped to HS where we had a LL for ROTR, Toy Story mania, millennium falcon, and MMRR. Unfortunately, when we went in for Rise, they walked us right passed the transport, through a hallway and into the room with the storm troopers! Those of us who had ridden it before new immediately that it wasn’t right. It was also much more obvious that the cast members were doing queue management instead of being part of the story. My poor mom had no idea what was going on. Dad figured it out, but I talked to a cast member at the exit. The ride had just gone down, they were trying to fix it, and it should be fixed soon if we wanted to come back. Unfortunately, with the kids, that wasn’t going to be possible. But I was able to talk to a cast member who refunded us for the LL so we could try again another day. We did split up for dinner, I had planned to go to docking bay 7 and my sister didn’t think her kids would eat there. But that was fine. We met after dinner to ride TSM, which is beloved by all of us. Then we all went home.
I definitely missed staying at Riviera for this park. Taking the bus back home was not as magical as taking the skyliner home.

Friday was our AK / Epcot day. So an early day again! Although this time it was known it would be early, and so lunch was at a much more reasonable 11:30 am. We did the following things: FoP, the safari, some of us did expedition Everest, and then we did the bird show. While the brave few were doing EE, the rest of us did some wandering. We went back to discovery island to see the puppets and we were also able to catch the little show there with the macaws. (I may have planned to catch these things). I think we also took a picture and saw the tail of one of flotillas. Lunch was at Tusker house. It was fine. I don’t think it was as good as pre-COVID, and I actually preferred the family style state of affairs to this. Meh. Maybe it was just an off day? Also, the server there gave my sister a hard time about getting my discount. Because I wasn’t at the same table.. .I”m sure he was doing his job, and he ended up letting them have it in the end, but it was a bit annoying. If we could get a table for 11, we would have! No issues at any of the other restaurants.
My mom commented to me that AK must be really popular because it was so busy. And I was like, actually… no. It’s just that bad at absorbing crowds. Also, what she observed during the FoP rope drop was not great. They were quite a bit farther back from us, and the crush of the crowds was worse. She saw someone fall and she was very worried she was going to get hurt. My parents are getting older and they were definitely refusing the idea of riding a scooter, but falling is very scary. It’s probably something to consider, not doing the rope drop and instead LL in the future if that’s a concern. But this particular crowd was really bad.
After AK, we went to Epcot. There, we rode Soarin over California, living with the land, the 3 cabelleros, Frozen, gotg, and we did walked through Moana. My mom has told me since that Soarin over California was her favorite ride. She didn’t associate the Moana attraction with Moana, but she also really enjoyed that one too. We got her to go on gotg and she declared that one too much! Hah. She also said the boat rides were tough because the seats are low. She has very long legs and so it’s awkward to sit like that. Plus it’s hard to get up and out of the boats, she said they made her feel old.
For dinner, we at San Angel Inn inside the Mexican pyramid. My BIL and I rushed over to make the check in and then we went over to the tequila bar to wait. We switched to the policy of ask to sit together, but quickly accept that the tables won’t be close to avoid waiting that long. But we had a few minutes of down time and I had never been in the tequila bar. It was nice to do something new and different. The tables were ready before the margarita I had ordered arrived, but the server put it in a to-go cup and it was brought to me. We really enjoy this restaurant, and it was excellent. I got the brisket tacos and the soup. No regrets.
Friday went really well considering. I was unable to get genie+ to work for me at 7am (I think this was a common problem, but I have no real data..) and by the time I did get it to work I wasn’t able to get ratatouille. And the time for Frozen was after dinner. I had hoped that we could get ratatouille and then get frozen as our second, because it looked like that was possible on the 26. I was really bummed and a smidge stressed that our day wouldn’t go well. But it worked out OK. At some point I was reading Disney tourist blog and I saw that the parks were hitting attendance ‘ wait times that were the worst in 4 years! I also saw that genie+ sold out at AK today! With that knowledge, I was really relieved that we were as successful as we were. Also, GOTG was down for most of the afternoon. I think we rode that after Frozen, and the queue for the LL was almost to the bathrooms!
The little bit of down time with my BIL was really nice. We discussed our different experiences with disney, and how DH and I have evolved so quickly. BIL is a Floridian, and he’s gone many many many times. He noticed that we would enter a queue and it would have some wait (that wasn’t accurate) and we would wait (not as long as the wait time) but when we left the ride, the wait time would be 2 or 3 times more than what it said before! When he realized that we had a method to our crazy timeline, it became a lot more fun for him.

Good to know as we're going with a group of 11 in June and I didn't realize the max number was different for LL vs. ILL. I watched a recent YouTube video that said only 10 for ILL and then I read that LL max was 11 so was questioning what was correct. I wonder how many people get caught up by that difference and I agree it seems arbitrary and unnecessarily confusing. Thankfully, ROTR is the only ILL attraction where we'd purchase for everyone in the group so I now know to have two people and 2 parties ready to book it. Dining has become a headache with the group size we typically travel with. We usually have 13 to 15 people in our group. Dining was a huge pain. I can't wait to see what fun I'm in for with the few group meals we want to do this June with 11 of us. I'm already setting expectations that it's going to be difficult to get us all in to some places at the same time, we'll likely need multiple ADRs and may not be "together," and that we're only trying it for a few favorite spots. I have no desire to spend the entire trip feeling like I'm herding cats to keep us all in the same place at the same time. We'll have more together time on the first few days but, for us, the key to a happy and successful Disney trip is to have some "we must stick together" time to get those group/family memories but then encourage (insist, demand, lol) people to do and go where they want.

Saturday! this was our least scheduled day. Basically, we had a plan to rope drop HS, do all the things that we couldn’t do the first day, and then we would do… whatever mom and dad wanted. So we did: slinky dog, TSM, (Aerosmith&TOT) or (MMRRx2), ROTR (this time it was a complete version), and star tours. Not necessarily in that order. Mom rode slinky dog! She didn’t hate it (but probably didn’t love it either). Dad built a lightsaber with mom as his +1. For lunch we ate at ABC commissary. That was a crowd pleaser, and with a little bit of luck (and going to the right, not the left…) we found a large table for all of us. We also made sure to have dad get a picture with his light saber and since be also bought a cloak, DH may have made him put it on! They even went traipsing through looking for the perfect picture, it was the doorway. Haha. My dad was confused. But I think he loves the end result. It’s fantastic. Obi Dad Kenobi!
Mom really wanted to do some more exploring at Epcot. She had gotten a taste at the Norway and Mexico pavilions, so she wanted to do that. Dad wanted to take his new stuff back to the campsite, so he went off on a tour of Disney transportation. Mom would have preferred dad to stay with her, but she wanted to explore and she knew the rest of us wanted to ride rides. I told her of course! I showed her on her phone how the map worked. I think she got confused about what direction to walk in, or she did what she thought and went ALL the way around. But when she was done, she called me and said, oh Cathy, I’m lost. I was hoping she had made it around and was in the Mexico pavilion, but actually she was in the Italy one! So you know how everyone hated the barges for fireworks staying out? Well, when you’re trying to get to your mom and it’s headed towards dinner time and everyone has walked too much for 3 days…. That’s when the drawbridge is up and the barges are going through! But mom met me at the bridge, and we found each other.
This being the last day for the extended family, AND Dec 30th, we thought it would be great to see MK’s fireworks. I had done some research and new that we could see them from just outside of Gasparilla’s grill, and that should be an OK experience. It was a great experience. The music being piped in, the fireworks being close (but not too close), going in and eating dinner at the grille right afterwards…. Everyone was happy.
I think I’ve done MMRR a few too many times this trip. HAH. I really enjoy that ride, but … it’s not that repeatable!

Sunday was our actual last park day. It was just us and We… Didn’t sleep in and rope dropped MK again. We rode 7dwarves twice, Haunted mansion, pirates, dumbo, Winnie the Pooh, Big thunder, little mermaid, and probably others that I’m forgetting. It was New Year’s Eve and the place was PACKED. Plus, things were not working. I don’t remember the extent of things being down, but big thunder was down for awhile. I think space mountain was down. 7 dwarves started late so we were waiting for them to let us in. We were counting our blessings that this didn’t happen on the day with the family! It’s always risky to rope drop a priority like that. We ate at skipper canteen for lunch, but we were a little late. The parade was going through at noon! We may have made it to the correct side then stopped to watch knowing that we’d be OK. We’re getting pretty good at pushing the limit for how late we can be before it’s a real problem. We left the park when DD was done. And she was DONE! DH took her back to the room where she fell asleep and DS and I checked out the contemporary. We got dinner at the grille a second time and watched the fireworks at the same place a second day. Well, some of us did. DD needed to use the bathroom just at the countdown and so we missed most of them.
Travel day was really easy for the kids and me. We went to the cafe to get breakfast and it was fantastic. We went to the lobby and bought some treats (the line was the smallest at 9:30am on New Year’s Day! ) and then we headed to the airport to fly home. DH left super early to drive the car home. I’m never excited to ever drive to Florida, ever again. We’ve done it 3 times now since COVID and it’s really hard on us.
I’ve got a prequel that I forgot about initially. We stayed one night at OKW on our drive to Florida, so I’ll write about that.

So.. thoughts.
We have never really traveled with family. Any traveling is to go to family, or have family come to us. Not go with family to do something. So this was completely new. It was surprisingly successful. I don’t think it would have been successful if we had added another sister and their family at all. (I have 3 sisters..). I love them all, but DH would have gone absolutely bonkers or we just wouldn’t actually do anything with anyone. DH did think that in this case everyone adjusted to our schedule/plan because Disney is our 3rd place.
Dining: I think this came across, but it was a pain in the ass. Sorry, not sorry. It worked OK. I don’t think I want planning for large groups to be my usual thing. I think I would consider paying for a service if I had to do this again. I probably wouldn’t because I’m frugal.
Touring went great! That was honestly the easiest part. I think next time I would solicit from everyone what their must do rides in each park were and maybe we’d have multiple groups going around depending. It’ll be easier as some of the kids get older and they can wander the parks by themselves.
I wish we could have made park days one more day so we could have spent half a day down time at the campground. It was a missed opportunity that we didn’t spend any time at the campground. Mom and dad did make it into the trading post, and mom had fun looking at all the merch. But the only displays we saw were the ones right next to mom and dad’s campsite. They were over the top.
We stayed at VGF! This was our first time as our family staying there, and it was great. It’s just as comfortable as Riviera, it’s just as nice. DH likes the food better. Transportation was fine. There was one night coming home from Epcot where we waited (and waited) for the monorail to start going from the ticket and transportation center. But the skyliner will slow/stop too and there can be delays. Bus service was good. I think we were successful at getting on the first bus of the morning. There isn’t a huge crowd that early, at least one morning we were the only ones on the bus.
If we go again as a group, I think we will try to coordinate staying in a grand villa or at least staying at the same hotel. It turns out we have enough points to book a few nights in a grand villa. But this first time, I knew mom and dad wanted to stay in the campground.
I am planning to go back with just this sister in the fall. We’ll go to the Halloween party, ride whatever we want, and slowly wander around all the shops in world showcase. Maybe try a few food&wine things. It’ll be amazing. I think that’s the best part about this trip. She had so much fun and she was ready to go back before she left. <3

A prequel: I almost completely forgot. On our drive down to to Florida, we stopped in Orlando to spend the night. We had planned to do this ages ago and honestly if we hadn’t had that planned we would have stopped immediately after entering Florida. South Carolina was horrible to drive through. I don’t remember exactly when we made this plan, but we had a few choices of places to stay. I wanted to stay in a studio because it was just one night and we should be able to handle one night in a studio. I may change my mind! I was able to book at old key west, one of the properties we hadn’t been to yet. So some thoughts! It is definitely cute. DH was weirded out by the doors to the rooms leading directly outside, as this is what happens at places like pop century! I think we were worried we would have to drive or catch a bus to get to the main building, but that was not the case. DS was up early and he and I left to go wandering and find myself some coffee early. It was a really easy walk to the main building. We’d probably feel differently if we had been at the parks all day, but after sitting in the car all day the walk was great. I had also planned to check out Olivia’s for breakfast, which was good. We also checked out the commissary / gift shop. That was a great gift shop! There was so much DVC stuff! I don’t think I saw all of that anywhere else. I loved it. I don’t remember the state of OKW rooms, when they were last updated. This room was definitely so much less than Riviera’s rooms and VGF’s rooms in terms of colors, art, and even touches of Disney. The fact that it had two beds was nice, but it also doesn’t have a lot of places to sit. The shade for the door to the patio was so obnoxious to use! And it was weird that if we sat out there, we’d see into others rooms and others could probably see into ours. I’d probably prefer the 1 bedroom, I had forgotten that these only have sleeping surfaces for 4, so it was a problem with our kids sharing a bed. Oops. Bottom line is I would be fine staying here if it meant I could be at Disney. It won’t be my first choice, and I think DH would prefer not to. It’s so great that there’s so many choices so we can all stay where we prefer most of the time

I believe it’s 12 for genie+, and 10 for ILL. There are some restaurants that will make reservations for 12. But not many. It might be worthwhile checking now to see what could be available. But getting 2 tables for 6 with two different MDE accounts does work. It’s also probably easier if you’re not going at New Years! I think all of our reservations were within 20 minutes, but usually 5 minutes or the same time. The person who made the reservation doesn’t even need to check in. Anyone in the party can check in with the name. And you can give new phone numbers for call backs. So that part isn’t too bad. Do a better job at getting pictures with everyone! We only got that to happen once.

This last trip, our friend fortunately had her own and we were able to get a few booked close together. But for meals where they weren't joining us, it was harder since our group was still bigger with 10 total. For those the dining times were less than desirable. I think we had the last seatings for Fairytale Dining and Beaches and Cream. Not fun with little kids. It does sound like a successful trip. Agree about OKW studios. They're okay if just husband and I, but as a last choice. Hate those window coverings. We do however love the 2 bedroom for larger groups because they are so roomy.

I do all the scheduling/ planning etc. you can still do all of that even if someone has their own MDE account. I had my dad on the phone walking him through all the things to make an account, and we did that for mom too. In these days where magic bands are at least $10 and most of my adult family has an Apple Watch already… it’s just so much easier for them to have their own account. As long as everyone shares plans with “friends” you can find them and add tickets to their account. We did the dining reservations together. DH and I went systematically through our list and did our best. We also did not eat at any hard to get places. Eating late just doesn’t work for us. We usually book like this anyway so we can get priorities and then we drop extras. thank you. It was successful.
