I was on SW site the day they opened up flights for my Seattle trip. They had NO direct flights for our travel dates. I think SW has drastically reduced the number of direct flights in general. This has me looking at least to Spirit for a discount airline. For Seattle it may be worth looking at AS as this is their home airport. Often some pretty good prices in advance. Could be competitive with the LCCs.
Cheers.
As your local Seattle MO rep - brp is right Alaska Airlines aka AS is based here and is the first place to check. SWA doesn't have any direct Seattle flights except seemingly to California. Also check Delta. Delta got spurned by Alaska a few years ago and Delta basically declared war on AS. They set up a minihub here and constantly undercut Alaska's fares nowadays. I fly a ton for work (I'm in sales) - where are you flying in from @bwvdreamin?

Yep, we started planning our Christmas 2022 trip in 2020. It was a huge point use and with the 50% borrowing restriction I had to very carefully plan trips before then in order to have enough left over to make the 880 point ressie at 11 months out (Jan 2022). 880 pt ressie? Wow! Never have imagined one so high! Hopefully was a fantastic trip! It was, thanks! This was our big once in a lifetime trip to Bay Lake Tower for a week over Christmas in a Grand Villa. It was definitely a trip to remember.

Either they were a lot more or the times did not work. We have one layover in Denver ( for both segments). Not too terribly bad. But we are just so done with SW, I have to find alternatives. The problem is SW has a HUGE hub at BWI and their flight offerings and prices are hard to beat. Still, I am done with them at the moment.

Check IAD flights - I usually find that is the cheapest direct flights from the DC/BAL area.

Non stop airlines only do tickets about 6-7 months in advance it seems - well layovers I could book early but I prefer non-stop flights. I will book at 11 months when I can and hope the airlines are decent with flight times. I never really think further out than about a year or so. I have rough ideas but not entirely. We're also stuck to school schedules. This year I didn't realize we'd move our spring break 2 weeks and annoyingly be the week before Easter. Points are high. We might go elsewhere. Not entirely sure. Otherwise I rarely think that far out. I was on SW site the day they opened up flights for my Seattle trip. They had NO direct flights for our travel dates. I think SW has drastically reduced the number of direct flights in general. This has me looking at least to Spirit for a discount airline. If flying from LR to MCO, I have to buy as soon as the window opens, and will have to change planes. We prefer to drive to Memphis. I can get a direct flight from Memphis, and can typically get the best pricing 60-90 days out. NO ONE offers direct from LR to MCO. Memphis is my best option.

To the original question, it depends what constitutes planning I guess. We went in December 2016 for Christmas & New Year for eldest’s 21st. Youngest son said he wanted the same for his 21st, but with a summer birthday he wanted Christmas again. That meant 4 years away, which turned into 6 years. I’d thought our next trip might be Spring 2025 or Fall 2025, until I realised I probably can’t retire until a year later. And working in a school means no off-peak travel. So still over 3 years away. <sigh> And I’m already planning! Looking up points charts (for 2024), working out permutations of resorts. Who wants to stay where etc. But … I’m always planning a trip, just for fun. Passes the time between real visits. 6 years seemed like a lifetime though.

6 years seemed like a lifetime though. Good thing you can't book that early, or you would log onto the DVC page and be greeted with "2,150 days until your next trip!!"
