We've been to HHI many times in March. Weather is usually in the 70's which is plenty warm for our Midwestern blood for lots of swimming in the pool The ocean is definitely cold but it hasn't stopped my kiddos from wading in... Thank you. I have been thinking when other times to visit would work for us. We always do our family trips in summer, since oldest shares custody of his three girls. We have to work within those constraints, but every other year he also gets fall and spring breaks. Husband had mentioned perhaps around Christmas, but I am afraid that would be too cold for us to swim.

Fourth full day. I walked over to Hilton Head Social Bakery to grab a few items for breakfast. Husband loved the almond croissant. Son had a blueberry tart. We had all the kids signed up to make Vacation Pillows. My daughter in law hadn't ever made fleece tie pillows or blankets, but as an old former Girl Scout troop leader, I am well versed. My troop made blankets every year to donate to area shelters. Together we were able to help all four kiddos get their pillows done, and they love them. Declared them perfect for using in the car on road trips.
After, we had a quick lunch before heading out for a Dolphin and Vanishing Island excursion. I booked it through Lowcountry Watersports. I was also able to add our other son to the excursion. On previous trips we have had private excursions, but with the size of our group I had to go with the bigger boat, all of the private tours have a max of 6 passengers. All told I guesstimate there were 30 on this tour. Wind had picked up, so the water was a bit choppy. We saw a couple of dolphins as we headed out, but didn't stop. Our captains goal was to make it to the vanishing island. Unfortunately, once we got there, the wind was blowing the water hard enough that the sandbar was disappearing before our eyes. Big bummer because we weren't able to stop and get off to explore and shell hunt. Our excursion turned into a dolphin trip only. Lowcountry did refund all the difference in tour prices though, which was appreciated. So we took our time heading back, scanning the waters for dolphins. We found quite a few, including a baby swimming with it's mom. That thrilled the grandkids.
After, we took the two middle grandkids and uncle to go explore a little bit. We stopped at Publix to get subs for lunch, then headed to Mitchellville Freedom Park. Mitchellville was a Freedmans community during the Civil War, and now has some reproduction buildings and informative signage to tell the history. We would love to see more buildings added, to give a better idea of life during that period. We had a little picnic on some benches there, then made our way around to learn about the area history. If you enjoy history or are a Civil War buff, this is a recommended stop.
Tired and sweaty from walking around, we headed back to the resort. Decided on one last trip over to the Beach House before dinner. Uncle had fun grabbing the kiddos and running in to the surf, while the kiddos squealed. We then made our way to a completely empty Beach House and enjoyed the pool for about an hour.
Everyone was exhausted from the day, so for dinner we decided to walk over to Scott's at Shelter Cove, which everyone enjoyed. My opinion though, between the two, Poseidon's had the better seafood. Service was great.
Before retiring for the night, the grandkids and I decided to try one last time at catching crabs. We only caught one. A sneaky creature stole the remaining shrimp out of the net.
The day is done, and we will check out in the morning. I like to pack as much as possible the night before, so all that is left is loading up, stripping beds, and gathering towels. We have loved this trip to HHI, the entire week felt like we were at Summer Camp. Hopefully we won't have to wait so many years before I have luck in booking.
Highlights, according to the grandkids: popsicles at the pool, arts and crafts, seeing dolphins, catching crabs, seeing two deer in the sand dune at the Beach House.

The naturalist who at been at HHI for many years (Cassie) seems to no longer be at the resort. Offerings on the naturalist side seem to have dwindled since she left... Don't worry too much about the lack of Naturalist at the moment. In the 20+ years since we started going to Hilton Head, I've lost track of how many naturalists they've gone through. Fortunately, the naturalists usually get great opportunities moving on, and DHHI resort ends up with someone new and just as enthusiastic. There have been a couple times when the naturalist leaves with not much notice, and the resort is left with a "hole" for a while. They don't want to hire just anyone-but eventually, they get another great person. And I agree with you about Poseidon-better seafood than Scott's. DH and I were just talking about Poseidon yesterday and missing it.
